Field notes: a forwarder's first week
What changed when rate requests stopped sleeping in an inbox overnight.
These are field notes from the first week of running a quote desk for a small freight forwarder. Nothing dramatic happened. That was the point.
Before
Rate requests arrived around the clock and waited for a human to wake up, sit down, and work through them in order. The early ones got careful answers. The late ones got rushed answers, or none. The customer rarely knew which kind they would get.
After
Requests were read, sorted, and drafted as they arrived. By the time the team logged in, the overnight backlog was already triaged and half-drafted, waiting for a check and a send rather than a cold start.
The win was not working faster. It was that the queue never started the day behind.
The numbers will matter later. In the first week, the change you could feel was simpler: nobody opened the inbox to a wall of requests that had been sitting untouched since the night before.
